In the lacuna between what we want, what we want to want, and what we don’t yet know to want lies the entire task of self-knowledge. —Maria Popova
So many of us right now are living between two places—the scene of arrival and the point of departure.
For months (and maybe years), we’ve searched for the relief of knowing “the right thing to do.” We can see pieces of our new life running across our mind’s eye in a staccato series of film clips. It’s delicious to get lost in these visuals of what could be, what it would be like to live with such courage.
And while every nerve ending, every chakra is shouting, “YES!,” we wonder, we waffle. We wait.
I used to believe that our tendency to stay on the sidelines emanated from a desire to be clear on our destination and know with certainty that it was our best choice. But now, I have a different hunch.
We already know what we want—our soul has not forgotten. While it’s true we may not know precisely how to navigate to our destination just yet, we do know the color and contours of the shoreline we see in the distance.
The island of our next.
Understanding What’s Holding Us Back: The Language of “Someday”
What, then, is holding us back?
Our very human desire to have already arrived with all the messy chaos of the journey behind us can often delay our personal growth.
Because we cannot predict in detail how things will unfold, the bumps and challenges we will face, or how certain consequences of our embarking upon a new path will reverberate in our lives and those of our loved ones, we can become quite skilled in speaking the language of Someday.
Someday, I will have the nerve to start that enterprise.
Someday, I will pack up and go on a life-changing travel adventure.
Someday, I will choose joy, excitement, and passion over the dulling comfort of not rocking the boat.
The tar pit of Someday is corrosive, sending us into a doom spiral of believing more in limits than possibilities. It drains our energy, numbs our creative edges, and weighs us down.
The lens of Someday distorts our reality and shrinks our perception. With awful practice, our minds convince us that our plot of land, the territory of our dreams, is an area of only a few feet.
The soul, though, knows it is limitless. And in those opposite perspectives, we vacillate, swinging back and forth until we are dizzy and discouraged.
A Simple Exercise to Move Forward to Personal Growth
Let’s choose to get off that carnival ride.
Select a two-hour window in the coming days and hold that time in your planner. Take yourself (and your journal and pen) to a place that inspires you, a beautiful location where you feel abundant, connected, cozy.
At the top of the page, write: What Would Need to Be True to Make Someday Today? For 10 minutes, free-write everything that comes up for you. No censoring, no judging. Just write like the wind.
Now, take a moment and study your words. What leaps out at you? Do you spot a first step, no matter how small? While still in your dreamy setting, decide and commit to taking that first step. And then, choose a day and time you will take it and ink it in your schedule.
