What do we do when feeling trapped?
“…but i had something big inside me that i wanted and had to say and if i hadn’t written that book, i don’t think i would feel free….” ~ Amanda Palmer
Nearly six years ago, Amanda Palmer sat in a bar in Melbourne and wrote the first words of what would become The Art of Asking. She would go on to write thousands of words a day for two months before beginning the slog phase of editing.
Amanda celebrated her milestone in a recent Facebook post which I read with a pounding heart as I took in her words: “…if I hadn’t written that book, I don’t think I would feel free….” When something resonates within us on a cellular, knowing level, we shake with adrenaline as the message courses through us.
Creativity & Freedom
I looked away from the screen, put my phone to my side, and picked up my pen and a scrap piece of paper (which contained scribbles of ideas for my guiding phrase for 2020). In the center of the ragged piece of legal paper, I wrote CREATIVITY & FREEDOM in all caps. I wanted to capture a hint of what Amanda had revealed in her post so I could return to it later and dig around in her words for clues.
I flipped the paper over. I scanned the notes of my vision for 2020 that I had written several weeks prior. The word freedom appeared over and over. I was reminded that when I get right down to it, freedom is what I am after. It lies beneath not only my goals and desires for what I want to create in my work and in my life, but it also forms the core of my Why with my work with entrepreneurs.
Even though I’m not feeling trapped in my life or business, I still want to feel more freedom.
I not only want freedom for myself, but I am also deeply passionate about helping my clients who are feeling trapped set themselves free.
There are lots of ways…many roads… to get to the Rome of Freedom. We can arrive via creating wealth, flexible schedules, acts of service, and/or beautiful lifestyles and businesses tailored to our unique rhythms, preferences, interests, and skills.
Arriving on wheels powered by our creativity, though, is a journey of rich self discovery laden with the reconnecting of heart and soul threads that were pulled apart years…decades…ago.
Creating something from our depths holds the power to heal us, complete us, and cement soul contracts with others. The stirrings that have been clamoring to shake us—wake us—will not be denied, and will surround us with prison bars if we refuse their bids.
So maybe now is a great time to consider what is for us either feeling trapped in prison (if gone unexpressed/created) or the key to freedom (if expressed/created).
We already know what it is. We’ve known all along. We may have been masters of denial as we shelved our dream in the darkness of our Someday Closet. But now, we can choose something else.
We can choose freedom. We can choose to create.
