Learning how to handle risk is the key to achieving our greatest creative successes, but how do we overcome our fear and aversion, and access the bravery to embrace risks? The key lies in connecting with our truest creative selves. Here are 3 practices to help you tap into that creativity at your core.
Art is an adventure into an unknown world, which can be explored only by those willing to take risks.
Mark Rothko
Risk is invaluable.
It is through the willingness to embrace risk that we often achieve our greatest successes. Our greatest happiness.
Deep down, we already know this.
Risk, by its very nature, though, implies uncertainty and the potential for failure.
What if we are highly risk-averse and find ourselves nauseated at the thought of making big decisions and bold moves? What if we have tried in the past to find our resolve and never could gather our nerve? Are we doomed to a life of bitterness, beige, and boring?
I have great news: Tapping into your innate creativity is your bridge across the chasm to the life you desire.
I know how hard it is to believe this. Stay with me.
Hundreds of my students like the amazing Marcia Dawood (get on her list, by the way, so you will be the first to know when her book is released!) can vouch for this transformation:
“Susie’s class has been a revelation, transforming my perspective on both my professional endeavors and personal life. The joy of exploring creativity within the class was unparalleled, and the wealth of knowledge I gained is truly invaluable. These insights will undoubtedly guide me long after the class has concluded, enriching my journey ahead.”
How to Handle Risk: 3 Practices for Tapping into Your Creativity
Learning how to handle risk and uncertainty means learning how to tap into your creativity. Tapping into your creativity involves turning inward and learning about yourself. It’s about clearing the path to your human center, your creative core. Here are three essential practices to get you there:
- Release what is not you.
- Remember what brings you alive.
- Recover who you truly are.
I find collage to be a powerful tool for this kind of self reflection and exploration. As you fill the pages, you can gain clarity, calm, and an ability to connect with possibilities in ways that have previously eluded you. You might also choose to meditate, journal, or make art in another form.
However you do so, practicing these three components of self discovery can help you transmute fear into creativity and learn how to handle risk—how to stretch your fear like taffy.
When you see your creativity with full clarity, you allow yourself to look at creative risk with hope. You’ll find that what used to be scary can actually be fun!
Learning how to handle risk is necessary for breaking through old limits, reinventing ourselves, and achieving our fullest potential. By gaining clarity of our creative selves and growing our creative risk tolerance, we can unlock the soulful pursuit of what brings us alive.
