Give yourself permission to live your dream now—there is no need to wait around for an artificial “right time.” All it takes is a little courage.

“I’ll be ready to take the next step when…”
I welcomed three, 1-1 coaching clients this week and was eager to get to know them and dive into our work together. I quickly discovered each is exceedingly bright, creative, and accomplished. Each is also stuck, riddled with self-doubt, and exhausted from burnout.
A fog of resentment and limiting beliefs envelopes each of their spirits and clouds their decision-making.
Here is a random sample of some of the things these powerhouse entrepreneurs said during our private sessions:
“When the kids are grown, then I’ll take more time for myself. Right now, though, that’s just not possible.”
“I’m not making any plans beyond the next few weeks. Things feel too uncertain right now to make big plans.”
“I’m not quite ready to put myself out there yet—certainly not in the way that you suggest. When I get a bit more confidence in being a lot more visible, I’ll start speaking and hosting events.”
“When I’m retired, I’ll travel the world like you.”
“When I get another $150,000 saved, I’ll be ready to write my book.”
Can you spot the brain pattern in each of these statements?
It is the soul-crushing, linguistic construction of “When X happens, then….”
We are beautifully trained through cultural, parental, and peer messaging that achieving the desired end result we seek drives our courage, happiness, and freedom. Similarly, our brains are adept at pumping out thoughts of lack, lack, lack from the moment we rise each morning.
These combine to make soul-deadening shackles comprised of putting our lives on hold. And it feels like death because, in fact, it is. It is the slippery slope of relinquishing our vast power and agency to make bold moves that bring us alive or chase the dreams that stir our mitochondria.
Instead, we wait. We wait for years to come and go. We wait for our bank account to have a certain balance. We wait for more time to magically appear in our day. We wait for confidence.

Live Your Dream Right Now
Take out your journal right now. Ask yourself: Where am I putting my life on hold? What am I waiting to happen before I feel I can take the actions that my soul is desperate for me to take?
Begin by freewriting for about 8-10 minutes. Next, go back and spot your “When X happens, then…” statements.
Now, take a deep breath and reverse each of your statements. For example, say you have, “When I feel more confident, then I’ll pursue that creative project” in your journal. Reverse the sentence fragments and rewrite them like this: “When I pursue that creative project, then I’ll feel more confident.”We have to be the result now if we are going to set ourselves free to live our big lives.
It is going to be enormously uncomfortable. Our egos will thrash and buck like wild horses. We will desperately want to turn back to port and to what we perceive to be a safe harbor.
We will worry about resources, our abilities, and piercing scrutiny. We will cringe as we think about what others may think or say. We will feel naked, vulnerable, and insecure.
Now we are getting somewhere.
We are in good company. This is the creator’s plight—the adventurer’s challenge.
Take heart. We can calm the wild horse of us.
I have a theory that the suffocating fear we experience when pursuing our heart’s desires is comprised of approximately 30% genuine fear and 70% excitement.
Think about that for a moment. The pulsing vibrations in our body are intense and unfamiliar. It can feel as if we are going to be pulled beneath a rip tide of emotion, overwhelmed until we eventually drown.
But if we can tolerate that initial 60-90 seconds of breathtaking fear, we’ll notice it begins to subside if we don’t resist it. A window will open a crack, and if we are mindful, we can parse what is fear and what is exhilaration.
This gives us enough daylight in the cave to light the way for us to take the first step.
Another wave of panic will roll through us. Yield to it, and let it roll across your body. Another breath, another step forward.
This is how we build our courage muscles, fiber by fiber. Left foot, right foot.
I’ve been studying brain science for years, and the more I learn, the more I want to share this powerful knowledge with others.
