The desire to be perfect often acts as a barrier to creativity, locking up our ideas so they cannot break free, leaving us paralyzed by perfectionism. The key to unleashing them is learning to overcome perfectionism—one small, messy step at a time.
Many of us carry this silent struggle: an inner voice whispering that we’re not enough, that our ideas aren’t perfect, or that we should wait until the timing feels right. This self-doubt and fear can be paralyzing, leaving us stuck and unable to take action. In essence, perfectionism is the enemy of productivity.
So, how can we overcome it? The simplest yet most powerful step is to start before you feel fully ready, despite the doubts, fears, and worries that tell you otherwise. Each small, imperfect act of creation—each step forward—breaks the cycle of hesitation and opens the door to growth, creativity, and possibility.
By taking one messy, imperfect step after another, you’ll gradually learn to release perfectionism and move closer to the big, creative life you want. Read on, and let’s take one messy step together.
I’d rather regret the things I’ve done than regret the things I haven’t done.

Paralyzed by Perfectionism
I overheard a story this week that took me to my knees.
In a dusty corner of a thrift store, someone stumbled upon a journal. There was an inscription on the end sheet inside the front cover that read: “To My Wild One: Write your heart out.”
The woman sharing the story then delivered its heartbreaking end. Every single page in the journal was blank.
I let out a guttural moan and leaned against the wall. Sophie trotted over to comfort me and sat at my feet, head tilted upward.
Someone once believed in this “Wild One”—enough to gift them a journal, a space to explore, create, and dream without limits. And yet, it sat unused, its potential locked away by invisible forces: fear, doubt, perfectionism.
Maybe, like so many of us, they were paralyzed by perfectionism. Maybe they were afraid of writing something “bad.”Maybe they didn’t know where to begin. Maybe they felt unworthy of the title “Wild One”—like they had to earn it before daring to claim it.
That empty journal is a quiet cautionary tale for us all: Don’t be the person who leaves their pages blank.
Entrepreneurs, creators, and dreamers often sit on the sidelines, waiting. Waiting for the perfect idea. Waiting until they feel more confident, more capable, more “ready.”
But waiting rarely leads to readiness—it leads to regret.
Creativity is a practice, not a performance. Action is the antidote to fear.
Your big idea, your art, your venture, your voice—none of it has to be perfect. It just has to be real.
The first try might be awkward. The second might fall flat. But every attempt is a step forward, a line on the page, a life lived fully.
Don’t let your blank pages become a symbol of what could have been.
If you’re feeling paralyzed by perfectionism, I challenge you to grab a pen and paper and take one small action today. Choose one (or all!) of the journaling prompts below and just start—simply write. Move yourself from hesitation into motion, from thoughts into action.
Journaling prompts to help you get off the sidelines:
- What would I create if I knew no one would judge me?
- If I gave myself permission to try just one imperfect step today, what would it be?
- What message would I write to my “Wild One” self right now?
This is your nudge. Your invitation. Your blank page. Remember, the key to releasing yourself from the tyranny of perfectionism is just to begin. Your stories, ideas, and dreams are waiting on the other side of that first, imperfect line.
Write like the wind. Start the business. Post the art. Pitch the idea. Be willing to make a mess.
Live with your whole heart and without regret, Wild One.
